Ushanka

In other words, the fur hats with ear flaps that Russians wear during the winter months. While it doesn't get nearly cold enough here in the Rocket City to wear one on a regular basis, I think these are cool hats.

I like this one:

I wonder if it'll be cold enough this winter to wear one...

Nah...I don't want to have a winter THAT cold!!!

A colleague traveled to Russia last year and offered to bring me back one. I rebuffed his kind offer, he'd have a lot to carry anyway, blah blah blah. But he insisted, so I said sure. Sure enough, I now own one.

The only thing is it came with a hammer-and-sickle medallion on the front. Fortunately it was easily and damagelessly removable.

Well, Bo, you just ruined the authenticity of the hat. The Sickle and Hammer is the stamp on nearly ALL Russian imports/exports/and items sold in that country. It's like buying a designer brand t-shirt and ripping off the logo. Without the history of the hat or the symbol is represents, you now own just another dumb hat. Next time, don't be so ungrateful for such a kind gesture.
